Essential oils have gained immense popularity over the last few years, and for good reason. They’re multi-purpose, fairly easy to find, and provide a natural alternative for products we use every day. Different essential oils have different benefits, so depending on what you need you’ll have to find the right one for you. Here are five of our multi-purpose favorites:
- Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender has such a lovely, calming scent that helps decrease the negative effects of stress. Add a couple of drops in your bath to help you relax at the end of the day, or add it to a homemade lotion. This is also a great oil to diffuse to help ease tension or anxiety. In addition, lavender has been proven to support skin and hair growth, as well as aid in digestion!
2. Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint essential oil is steam distilled from the peppermint leaves, and is another fantastic oil to use in your diffuser! It’s refreshing, energizing, and can help you focus on your tasks around the house. You can also use this oil in most homemade lotion or toothpaste recipe for a nice, refreshing scent. This oil has also proved to be a naturally effective pest repellant!
3. Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon essential oil is great to use in any homemade cleaning products since it has natural antiviral and antibacterial properties. Just keep in mind that all essential oils are potent, and a little goes a long way! Almost all DIY recipes call for only a few drops. This is also another great oil to diffuse, as it has an energizing, clean scent.
4. Frankincense
Sourced from the Boswellia Sacra tree, this common aromatherapy oil has a variety of uses. It has strong anti-inflammatory effects and can also help reduce stress, similar to how lavender does. Frankincense is also a great oil to add to homemade lotions due to its strong anti-aging effects on the skin. It can improve the tone, elasticity, and defense mechanisms of the skin as well as fade spots, lines, and marks!
5. Eucalyptus
If you suffer from allergies year-around, this will be a personal favorite. Eucalyptus is known for its ability to aid in improving respiratory conditions (which is why its an ingredient in Vicks!) as well as relieving coughs and improving seasonal allergy symptoms. Eucalyptus helps clear your nasal passages by stimulating your immune system and makes it easier for you to breathe. For this reason, it also helps in reducing headaches.
Keep in mind that most oils cannot be used internally (always check!) and that they must be diluted before being used externally, particularly on children.
